Nevada Law Day 2010

Law Day Live! Event

On April 29 the Nevada Supreme Court, the State Bar of Nevada, and the Nevada Department of Education will host a live interactive web-based video forum linking students in four courtrooms across Nevada for a discussion about Technology in the 21st Century.

The forum kicks off a month-long celebration of the law and courts in recognition of Law Day, which is celebrated every year across the United States.

Using video conferencing and webcasting, four courtrooms in Nevada’s four population centers – Clark, Washoe, and Elko Counties and Carson City – will be linked together to allow students across the state to talk to one another and discuss topics affecting their future. Students across the state will view the two-hour event live and participating by commenting or asking questions through social media, including Twitter. The forum is expected to graphically demonstrate the amazing potential of technology for our courts in the coming years.

“So many of the fabulous technology tools being developed and used by our children are not even on the radar of many courts and judges, “said Justice Nancy Saitta, “These students are exploring the future and see it firsthand. We need to hear from them so we can better prepare our courts for the coming changes.”

Throughout the month of May, the legal community, judiciary and school districts statewide, will participate in classroom events, town halls and a variety of educational programs to showcase the possibilities for future courts and legal careers. Judges will meet with students in their courtrooms and attorneys will visit schools to talk about careers in the law.

Statewide students have been asked to compete in traditional essay contests as well as multimedia contests that will involve creating websites, podcasts, artwork, videos, or anything else their imaginations can come up with. In the contests, students will be exploring technological issues they face every day, such as cyber-bullying, the practice of sexting, the legal issues involved in downloading music, or the use of virtual worlds.

Judges plan to congratulate participants and winners from their judicial districts through lunch dates, cards or personal phone calls.

The live forum is being facilitated through the use of the Nevada Supreme Court’s video conferencing and web-based communication tools. The court’s technology allows link ups with courtrooms and buildings across the state to facilitate communication, sharing of ideas and reducing the cost of travel and other expenses. These tools have been used statewide to bring in experts for testimony in complex cases and to link up defendants with courtrooms.

Social media tools, such as Twitter, will be used to facilitate conversations with students, lawyers and judges across the state and to create a record of the many expected discussion topics.

Law Day Live organizers include the Nevada Supreme Court, the First, Second, Fourth, and Eighth Judicial District Courts, the Nevada Department of Education, the Clark County School District, the Young Lawyers Section of the State Bar of Nevada and Project REAL.
