Nevada Law Day 2011

PROCLAMATION

The Justices of the Supreme Court

Of the State of Nevada hereby honor and recognize

LAW DAY 2011

WHEREAS, Law Day is an acknowledgement and celebration of the heritage that is our nation’s and state’s system of justice, liberty, and equality under the law; and May 1 has been declared by Congress to be Law Day; and

WHEREAS, the American Bar Association declared “The Legacy of John Adams – from Boston to Guantanamo” as the theme for this year’s Law Day celebrations; and

WHEREAS, this theme honors the role of attorneys, both historically and currently, in defending the principles of due process and the rights of the accused; and

WHEREAS, the Nevada Judiciary has dedicated itself to ensuring access to justice for all and preserving the rights of criminal defendants to legal counsel – just as John Adams demonstrated when he defended the British soldiers accused in the Boston Massacre; and

WHEREAS, it is important to emphasize how the law and our system of justice have contributed to the freedoms that all Americans of all ages share; and

WHEREAS, the justice system in Nevada – including the Judiciary, court staff, State and County Bar Associations, and attorneys and their staffs – works to ensure those same freedoms in Nevada; and

WHEREAS, on May 5, 2011, the Nevada Supreme Court, State and County Bar Associations, and school districts statewide will be conducting LAW DAY LIVE, an interactive presentation that connects four Nevada courtrooms in an Internet forum to explore the principles advocated by John Adams;

NOW THEREFORE, the Nevada Supreme Court declares May 1, 2011, to be Law Day in Nevada and the days surrounding May 1 to be included in the Law Day celebrations.
